Interpreting a Calibration Certificate

How to read and interpret a calibration certificate from a Surface Analyst or BC Mobile.

Our calibrations come in a couple of different packages which can be found here. Our Service Subscription packages include these options as well as priority handling and an extended warranty.

Below are examples of how to read and interpret our Standard and Advanced (IEC/ISO 17025.2017) Certificates of Calibration. Instruments that were previously calibrated to the Z540.1 or Z540.3 standard will now receive an IEC/ISO 17025.2017 calibration.

Standard Certificate:

Advanced & Deluxe Certificate (IEC/ISO 17025.2017):

  1. Calibration Traceability

In the top section of the calibration certificate, you will find the certificate number. This unique identifier is used for traceability. Directly below, moving vertically, you can locate the year and month in which the calibration was performed.

  2.  Basic Calibration Data

Information about the calibration object and the customer is documented in this section. If the calibration certificate is required to demonstrate traceability, it is crucial for this data to align with the information in test equipment management.

  3. Signatures

The calibration certificate includes the signatures of the technician who performed the calibration and the technician who reviewed and approved the results for release.

  4. Location of Calibration

The address of the permanent Brighton Science or Partner calibration laboratory or the address of the customer in the case of a calibration at a customer site (on-site calibration). Before an on-site calibration, Brighton Science checks the location to ensure that the required ambient conditions are met.

  5. Calibration Object

Essential information about the Goniometer and/or Balance includes details such as the manufacturer, type, serial number, device ID, and end customer number. Different calibration equipment may be utilized for various calibration points if necessary.

  6. Calibration Procedure

The internal procedure and version number that was used to complete the calibration

  7. Evaluation

The Evaluation section presents the calibration results in alignment with the criteria set forth in our internal calibration procedures. This section encompasses the following elements:

Measure: This refers to the instrument used to obtain the calibration results, along with how the measurement value is expressed (e.g., degrees). It identifies the specific device or equipment involved in the calibration process.

Droplets: This represents the number of droplets used in the measurement process.

As Found: This indicates the measurement values obtained from the instrument before any adjustments or corrections were made. It reflects the instrument's performance prior to calibration.

As Left: This section shows the measurement values after the calibration adjustments have been applied. It demonstrates the instrument’s performance post-calibration.

Std Dev.: This represents the standard deviation of the calibration results, providing insight into the precision and variability of the measurements taken.

8. Environmental Conditions

This is where the basic conditions under which the calibration took place are outlined. The balance used during calibration, the calibration data of the balance, and the temperature, humidity, and air pressure values are listed here. These values are taken into account when evaluating the calibration.

9. Calibration Notes

The calibration certificate ends with a comment box and general remarks about the measurement conditions and uncertainty of measurement.

10. Statements of Conformity

The Statement of Conformity, is made available upon request only as a separate document outside of the calibration report. This document includes:
  • The laboratory's name and accreditation details.
  • A description of the calibration or testing performed.
  • The results obtained, along with reference to the applicable standards.
  • An assertion that the results conform to the specified criteria.
